Shelf pressure on bottled water in traditional trade

Notes from neighbourhood grocery walks on how bottled water competes with refill stations and soft drinks for limited shelf space.

In neighbourhood groceries south of the city centre, bottled water often shares a narrow shelf with soft drinks and condensed milk. Refill stations outside the shop pull volume away from single-serve PET on hot afternoons, which changes how shopkeepers talk about restocking.

During retail channel walkthroughs, we note when water is stacked on the floor rather than faced at eye level, and when shopkeepers keep only one brand because the distributor’s visit rhythm is reliable. Those observations matter more than national share figures when a brand is negotiating a first listing in traditional trade.

Teams preparing a bottled-water push should ask for walkthrough notes that separate modern trade chillers from traditional trade floor stacks. The buyer objections differ, and so should the pack and pricing story.
